Now I have an STFM. Ho Ho Ho.

This should hopefully improve my ability to develop the DSTB1 firmware. Another machine and a different base for starters.

One thing I immediately forgot his how little memory 512k actually is!

At least you get a fully verbose error message. Not like @exxos' Gembench one.

Also I haven't fitted the booster yet.

Got to desolder this 68K... Not looking forward to that!

Right, so serious question, all.

I don't think I'm too shabby at soldering SMT.

I reckon I can hold my own on most through hole providing elegance isn't on the scoresheet.

But I've always considered myself a little sub-optimal when it comes to desoldering through hole parts.

I have a cheap self-heating manual desoldering pump which is normally decent enough to let me get caps, resistors and the like off board, but I don't have a fancy electrically pumped desoldering station or anything like that.

Now I want to develop on this STFM motherboard. I'm going to have to socket the CPU. That's DIP64... I'm quite worried that my normal technique of flux, more solder, desoldering pump, bit of wiggle and hot air from the top isn't going to cut it.

So, how tolerant of soldering iron incompetence are these old boards? I'm going to hazard a guess 'not very much', but since I've never done it before, I thought I'd ask in case actually they're famously easy (one can but hope...).

I'd rather not sacrifice a perfectly good 68k, but it's only an old 8MHz one and if the general consensus is 'don't risk it', then I'll snip it off and do the legs one at a time.

Opinions? Advice?

TVM,

Honestly get one of these types of things https://www.exxosforum.co.uk/forum/viewt ... 982#p69982

I gave up with a de-soldering pumps. Can't use the things anyway with my RSI
