14 Pin DIN replacement idea

Post by Cheshire Noir »

Hey all,
Thought I'd run this past the group before I go off haring down a wrong path..
I was looking for a 14 pin DIN suitable for an external Floppy drive project, but they seem to be getting quite rare these days. I certainly couldn't seem to find the right one from any sources I could get to in Australia.
That got me thinking. Maybe there's an alternative way?
Could I design up a small PCB with pins sticking out of it that could plug into the port and replace a dedicated DIN?
My thoughts was two boards, both round, with the pins passing through them. The top board would have short traces to solder points, allowing easy construction of cables.
I was thinking of using turned pins, like these: https://hobbycomponents.com/connectors/ ... -pack-of-5
I'd cut them free of the strip and solder a PCB on either side of the wide part of the pin.

Am I reinventing the wheel? Has someone already done this? Is there secretly a source of 14 pin connectors I should be using?

If I'm not reinventing the wheel, what improvements could I make to the basic idea?

Cheers, and thanks in advance.
