Turns out a friend of mine happens to have an oscilloscope, so I can measure things myself! :D
Still don't really know what/how I have to measure though...
The suspected problem is a dead shifter chip, so how do I check if that's the problem?

You can only really try chips in a known working machine to see if they are faulty or not.

To test a chip a second known good machine is the easiest way to test, you use a scope to trouble shoot everything else if things still do not work when the chip is known good.

Oh i thought you said I need to check clocks if I suspect a dead shifter?

Allright so how do i need to do that? Just measure the oscillator?
And how can those results give me an idea about what the problem is?
(Like I said, my knowledge of electronics isn't great, though my will to try to fix my own stuff is :D )

You measure pin 2 - 32Mhz, and pin 39 - 16MHz..

Though I am a little lost exactly what you have and have not got working now ? Seems you are troubleshooting a dead machine ? in which case you should probably open up a new topic as this thread was problems installing RAM which I assume is sorted now ?
