Re: When SGIs come to play

I just recently got my first SGI machine, it is just a lowly 200Mhz R5000 O2 but I get to see whether I want to invest in a more powerful model later.
I was worried the case would be damaged in shipping but luckily the seller packed it well. The Samsung Syncmaster 914v monitor I had for my NeXTStation works well with the O2.

Nice, I always fancied an O2, maybe I'll start to look out for one :)

I know right, you look away for just a moment and there's more!!!

Sadly I'm in the UK, so I think it might be a bit tricky :(

Well, lunchtime was interesting, I've managed to get my 2nd spare Octane running :)

It only powers up to the diagnostics and fails due to no HDD, but I can drop into the ROM based terminal and type hinv to see:

Turns out the RAM was unseated (Probably when we moved house) and some of the contacts needed a clean. Spec is quite low compared to my other Ocatane which is a dual 360Mhz R12000 with 2GB RAM, but hey, it works, so now I just need to see what I did with the HDD sled for it and see if I can drum up an HDD so I can install IRIX on it.

Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

Reminds me that I didn't fire up this baby for about a year:

Nice, it also reminds me that I should have never got rid of my own Indy :(

I rescued it (like 20 years ago) from our CAD training center at work where it was finally used to teach new hires CATIA V4 (and patience), so it (unfortunately) isn't the top notch machine but pretty decent (R4600 133MHz 512KB SC, 24-Bit XL graphics).

Picked up the machine and plugged everything I was able to grab from the others that were about to be disposed (full memory upgrade, additional SCSI GIO card). It also has a second NIC on the other GIO slot as the motherboard ports only supported half duplex. I also have the original keyboard and mouse as well as the IndyCam and a full set of IRIX 6.5 CDs.
And remember: Beethoven wrote his first symphony in C.
