How to setup a SD or CF for a TF card?

Post by Bikerbob »

Hi, I had an issue this past two weeks, and it ended up being just how I had the card setup.

I am not finding anything looking through topics or readmes, or videos on youtube that speaks to specifically what settings I need to use to setup a drive on the TF cards.

I use only the real hardware, I do not use WinUAE .. so I need to know how to do it on a WB3.1.4 desktop. A link or bookmark to something is fine.

Thanks

James

Hi James,

I went through this with 3.1.4 recently using h/w only (no UAE).

It turned out to be fairly simple:
  • Boot your 3.1.4 install floppy
  • Open HDToolBox
  • Change Drive Types
  • Add New...
  • Read Configuration
This should set up the cylinders, heads etc and let you partition it normally. I tried it on two different CF cards at least and they both were set up correctly.

I did see a huge amount of instability with this at the start though, but it turned out that my memory on the TF534 was too marginal at 50MHz. Once I switched out to a 40MHz oscillator it was rock solid.

Hope that helps.

Hi

As long as you have floppys and a working drive installing the OS, is easy, CF cards are just ide drives so will be detected just fine, then partition and run the installer.

Getting anything that's not on floppys will require a gotek and a load of download adf's. It will take some time.

1. Download an image from @supaduper
2. write it to cf card.

3. Screw up HDL and corrupt card.

4. goto 2.

doesn't matter wich media You are using: CF, SD or HDD - these all are pretty same. You just need to know KS restrictions and how to avoid them by using different file systems (OFS/FFS/PFS), input correct Maxtransfer rate, and that's pretty it.

So I have no idea what @Superduper is.

But the image I got from the CD included with the TF card works.

WHen I open HD Toolbox with the CF or SD card that the image is on, HD TOOL BOX sees NOTHING literally NOTHING.. I have no options, everything is greyed out.. but it works.

How does someone explain that?

When I boot from the floppies, and go into HD TOOL BOX and try and read configuration from the SD card.. and then try and save what it reads? IT crashes the system, and I have to reboot.

but write a VHD to a card.. hocus pokus, alakazam .. its works.

You may have one of those rogue CF adapters that have the transistors on it?
I dont think we found a workaround other than to buy one without.

Yes I know about that Paul, thanks... but I have been told and it seems to work if I remove the transistors it should be ok. I did that. IT does work with the IMAGE from the CD.. The SD card reader is the same behavior.

it's pretty easy to explain, i can bet You can't see anything in HDToolbox because it is set to other device (to work under WinUAE, for example)
set it back to scsi.device, and You'll be able to see Your card (Drive)..

im wondering why people are so lazy to read manuals? I also understand why Stephen goes cranky if he needs to repeat itself one million times.. :(
