A1000 and TF536 with CF card

Post by JackTheKnife »

I just got TF536 card with intention to put into A1000 but I'm not able to boot it with CF card connected to it. A1000 will stay in the black screen.

When I will disconnect and boot from the gotek, or just leave no "floppy" inserted, it will boot fine to the Workbench or Kickstart screen.

TF536 is on top of KuickStart II board with Kickstart 3.1 ROM as a default to boot.

Any thoughts on that? Probably, if I will find some spare time, I will check TF536 with A500 over the weekend to rule out card issues.

Thanks

Most likely an incompatible CF card.

No, this is one of mine and I shipped it with a tested CF card which booted fine on my A500. Something else is up here.

The only thing that comes to mind is that somehow the CF card got loose during transport and is not making full contact...

Yes - I have tried to re-insert CF card, no luck. Also there is no LED indicator when booted with CF card connected to the board so my first thought was about not enough power is getting to the CF reader so it may need to required some wiring from the board to have it up and running.

As I wrote before - I will check it with A500 if the time will permit over this weekend.

This could be a PSU problem, the TF card could well be tipping yours over the edge.

How can I verify that?

Check the +5V isn't going below 5V for a start. If the PSU isn't powerful enough the voltage will drop. Better to use an oscilloscope as the drops can be brief when something momentarily draws more power.
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

OK, it came up that A1000 works fine only with SanDisk CF 8GB card

No clue why but it may be needs more power as TF sits on top of KuickStart II board. Probably that setup will need CF adapter which has external power source like that one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Compact-Flash- ... 3145920489

Also I'm looking for CF adapter suggestion which can be installed directly to the TF board as with the cable is hard to fit in A1000 as it will go on top of FDD metal holder (as you see on the photo) or will hang over CPU which I think is not good idea.

Original A1000 PSUs are not great.
