Looks like I spoke too soon - I turned the A2000 back on today and the behaviour with the new H2 adapter and short 44-pin cable is now exactly as it was with the D2 adapter and long 40-44 pin cable. I'm a bit stumped now - any ideas what might be happening here?

That is very odd. Can you make sure you plugged it all the way in? Try pushing in the connector firmly. Maybe there are some connection issues...

I've just reseated everything several times (I agree it's very odd!) with no change unfortunately. If I set the master/slave jumper on the adapter to SLAVE I get a solid red activity LED and it isn't detected, and if I use the 8GB card again I get a permanent dull activity light and no card detected.

OK, unfortunatley this is hard to diagnose remotely. How about I send you another 536 with a CF adapter that I have tested here and you send me back the one you have, would that be acceptable?

I just remembered I own an A1200 so I took the IDE-SD adapter and card out of there and put it in the A2000 TF536, and it worked straight away - the CF card and adapter from the A2000 also works fine in the A1200. It looks like I either have a very coincidental loose connection somewhere or the CF card is picky to the point that it works randomly. I think I will get one of the blue and white CF cards and see if that works, and take you up on your kind offer if it doesn't.

It is quite possible the CF cards are a bit picky. With this one I haven't had absolutely any issues, (although I do occasionally receive dead ones): https://www.ebay.com/itm/8GB-Compact-Fl ... 4143466013

I ordered one of these cards, and have exactly the same behaviour which is a pain. I cloned the A2000 install I put onto the Sandisk CF on the evening it worked onto an SD card, put the IDE-SD adapter from my A1200 back in the A2000, and it works.

Totally mystified as to why the CF card isn't working in the A2000 - I would like it to as the SD card doesn't mount well in the case.

This is such a strange behaviour. Can you try my disk image and let me know if you get the same problem? Will PM you the link.

Those blue CF cards don’t work for me either. They hold the reset line low at power on

That's very odd because they are literally the only ones that work for me without any issue.
