H5 assembly drama

Post by exxos »

So I / we have a huge problem. JLC are out of stock of the 3.3V buffers, even though LCSC have them in stock.

JLC said:
Hello.Thank you for your quick response, and sorry for that since this components were belongs to lCSC warehouse,so we couldn't change the stock or know when time it will restock, since JLCPCB and LCSC were different company. And the purchasing department forbids us to interfere in the purchasing plan. Sorry for this, thank you!
Hello Chris,
For those parts in the JLC SMT parts library but shows LCSC warehouse, if match two conditions, 1, it is in Shenzhen warehouse, 2, the quantity in Shenzhen warehouse is larger than 100pcs, then we can use it. About the part you mentioned, the quantity in Shenzhen warehouse is less than 100pcs,so we can not use it, and it shows no stock in JLC SMT library,so sorry for your inconvenience.
I think JLC just don't want to deal with semis at all by the looks of it. Stuff is vanishing and they are never restocking them :(

So the only options are to:

1) Go into production and just not fit the missing parts. Buyers would have to fit them themselves.
2) Go oldskool and replace the whole IO IC's with mosfets, which would probably push the H5 release date back a fair bit and maybe cost more.
3) Look for somewhere else to assemble the PCBs.. which if they have to be shipped around, or sourced elsewhere, will take longer and be more expensive anyway.
4) Rip out the 3.3V drivers and put header strips to add a IO addon board on at a later date.

I'm open to thoughts, but assembly has become a huge problem lately with some other projects because of IC's being out of stock. Its annoying since JLC expanded SMT assembly capabilities, then have no plan to actually stock parts to assemble the stuff with! I really feel like JLC have screwed us all over with :(

I have sent 1 last plea email to JLC.. I said I need at least 350 of the buffers.. but I have to assume I will get nowhere. So need a plan on how to progress forward now.

Looking at mosfet based prices...

The IC was 10bit for £0.50.. Mosfets £0.0066 each x 10 = £0.066.. Of course there would also be 2 SMT resistors per mosfet.. but ironically, aside from the routing work involve, it could actually work out cheaper..

EDIT:

Emailed my old PCB guy to see what deal he can do me.. but nobody will be as cheap as JLC for this I think... but if it "only" ends up £5-£10 more per board, then it may be the best option.. At least then I can hopefully get all the SMT parts done...

I guess the logical first step is to find another place to have them made, as you're doing. Then a last resort is changing the design.

I'd just solder them up myself but then not everyone can but then I also have to ask how many people will initially need the 3.3v option.
If it ain't broke, test it to Destruction.

True.. Though if people want the upcoming awesome addons, then 3.3V is a must.. if they don't want to use 3.3V stuff then makes no odds.. But with myself and @Icky basically developing 3.3V only stuff.. people will get left behind if they want H5 addons...

My best thought is to do a addon board...

Looking at the layout...

If I used 1mm headers, then hopefully I can just replace the GTL chips with headers each side.

Idea being, get JLC to do the caps and resistors, then I will paste and assemble the 7 GTL chips myself as a optional addon board.

One question, when I looked for GTLxxx to do level conversion for my project, I ended up to select the NVT2008PW/NVT2010PW from NXP, that seems to be their successor (at least pin out looks the same to me).

Would such change be possible and solve the procurement problem ?
