SIMM Socket to convert SIMM to SIPP

Post by popcalent »

Hi everybody,

I have an Atari ABC 286/30 with 640KB of RAM. I want to upgrade to 4MB (the maximum as per the owner's manual). The computer has four 30-pin SIPP sockets. I've had a hard time finding SIPP modules that are not ridiculously expensive, so I resorted to buy four 30-pin SIMM modules with the intention to adapt them to the SIPP socket.

I've seen this product on the store: STE compatible 30pin simm socket £5 9 In Stock [0067]:

Will this take a 30-pin SIMM module and make it work on a 30-pin SIPP socket?

Thanks!

Yes. I've swapped sipp modules with sockets a few times on STE machines.

You can also solder a so-called precision goldpin header to the generic SIMM module, and you will have a SIPP module. I think that is much less effort, and less risk to damage a motherboard while desoldering the DIP-like header for SIPPs.

Thanks for your response. I couldn't find any "precision" gold pin headers. All I found are the regular pin headers that are too big to fit into the SIPP socket. About desoldering the SIPP sockets... I was thinking about snapping the SIMM socket into the SIPP socket with no soldering involved.

That doesn't sound like a good idea.. if you're not up to the task, send your board to @Steve to fit it out properly.

Wouldn't the SIMM socket pins fit inside the SIPP socket in the same way the precision pin headers do?

This is what my SIPP sockets look like:
